Vesa Lehtimäki

(b.1967) is a Helsinki based illustrator and a photographer. Raised in the shadow of Star Wars, educated in arts, worked in journalism, entertained by movies – all sorts of movies.

As a photographer, inspired by stories and untreaded creative paths, Vesa works in the small niches of toyphotography with mostly self-built scale models and Lego items. Best known for the original look to his photographs, created with small scale blizzards and smoky atmospheres. Photographed for Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel, Lego, Playmobil and Hasbro, but mostly just for fun. Featured in articles on NBC Today, ABC, Huffington Post, USA Today, Forbes, Wired, Buzzfeed, Mashable, Yahoo Movies, starwars.com and lego. com etc. Most notably recognized as an influence to the visual look of The Lego Movie (Warner Brothers 2015). Nominated for a HUGO award 2017. Some works published in “Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy” (DK Children, 2015), the first authorized art photography book with Lego. It is also the first official Star Wars book from a Finn.

The moniker “Avanaut” is derived from the Finnish word “Avaruus” (space) and Greek word “Nautos” (sailor). You know, like Astronaut or Cosmonaut whathaveyou.
